"The Stormcrow Is A Wide-Spread, Second Generation OmniMech.”

“The Stormcrow is a feared opponent on the battlefield.”

This 1:285 scale plastic model of a Stormcrow is made by “Catalyst Game Labs” and can be bought together with the Dire Wolf, Summonder, Mist Lynx and Shadow Cat in the company’s “Battletech: Clan Command Star” boxed set. All the pre-assembled miniatures in this “supplement to the BattleTech: A Game of Armoured Combat box” come with an assortment of Alpha Strike cards depicting various colour schemes. However, as I plan to employ this particular sculpt as a German Heinkel Flugzeugwerke class War Walker for an upcoming Weird War Two campaign using some homemade rules, I decided to go with a predominantly dark grey palette.

Built upon “a lightweight Endo Steel chassis” and powered by a 330 XL engine, the 38mm tall figure was initially undercoated with “Vallejo” German Grey, shaded in “Citadel” Nuln Oil, and dry-brushed using (more) “Vallejo” German Grey. I then ‘picked out’ the machine’s feet and a couple of areas around its cockpit using a combination of “Vallejo” Heavy Bluegrey and “Citadel” Nuln Oil. These areas were later carefully dry-brushed with (more) “Vallejo” Heavy bluegrey.

"Der feind sieht dein licht verdunkeln."

I did consider providing the Stormcrow with a splash of yellow or red to replicate the propeller heads of Heinkel bombers during World War Two. But couldn’t identify any ‘easy to reach’ areas which I felt would warrant such a contrasting colour choice. In the end I therefore settled upon simply ‘picking out’ a couple of the miniature’s joints, exhaust vents, ER Large Lasers and fuel tank with some “Vallejo” Gunmetal and a dash of “Citadel” Nuln Oil.

Luckily, so straightforward a paint-job has meant that I have also completed work on a second plastic model of a Mist Lynx to use as Henschel class German Wehrmacht War Walker. This “Catalyst Game Labs” figure was painted in the exact same colours as my first mech, predominantly using “Vallejo” German Grey and shaded in “Citadel” Nuln Oil. However, I was also able to apply a little “Vallejo” Sun Yellow and “Citadel” Reikland Fleshshade to the missile bay wrapped around the mech’s left wrist.

LVL Up WIPs - This Demon Hunter has been assembled using parts taken from two of their blind bitz pots

With the latest additions to my 6mm Axis Weird War Two force completed, I have spent some more time kit-bashing together the second of my 28mm scale figures for a collaborative demon hunter game I have in mind. This particular semi-tainted, futuristic warrior is entirely based upon the parts found inside a pair of small bitz boxes I bought blind at the LVL Up Gaming Store in Bournemouth, and appears to be exclusively comprised of second-hand plastic pieces taken from “Games Workshop” kits.

As with the first of my miniatures for this particular project, I was lucky enough to find a pre-painted Space Marine figure inside one of the pots - albeit the model was missing its arms and had had part of its right leg removed. However, with a piece of wire and the end of an Imperial Guard mortar, I was soon able to fashion a foot of some kind, whilst additionally plastering the fellow in lots of other pieces, including a Necron Gauss Blaster, a Seraphon hand-weapon and what looks like an Eldar weapon support…

I like your dark colour scheme on the first mech, it looks very sinister and mean! I don't like this demon hunter as much as the first one as the bits don't look as natural as the first one, which had a really chaotic look, but you have done well to get a nice looking figure together. Very interested to see the finished paint scheme of these two kitbashes!

Cheers Undercoat. I've actually spotted a couple of areas on the Stormcrow upon which an application of yellow might just work - in which case I'll post up a completed German party in the near future to show it off.

I really like this second Demon Hunter, so hopefully a proper paint-job will better tie-it altogether in your eyes. I think the painted Eldar platform somewhat clashes with everything else for some reason.

Nice work on the Mechs mate, I like the first one a lot looks great in the black. The second one seems to have a bit of an odd stance (I seem to think I've said this before), nowt wrong with the painting though that looks aces!

I seems demon hunting is a hazardous business, judging by the lacking limbs of you latest Space Marine! 😁 Who doesn't love a bit of kitbashing! It's like doing a jigsaw without the original picture and a pair of scissors to make the bits fit! 😉

Cheers Roger.

Thanks Roger. The stance on the Mist Lynx is definitely weird. Still they're both done now. I do have a second Stormcrow to finish, and its livery is a bit different to the predominantly "Vallejo" German Grey I've used here.

LOL!!! Big fan of these pots as you've probably worked out. My third figure is probably the most bizarre of the lot, so look out for that next week. 😉

The yellow bit you added adds a pop of colour and looks fine, I can see what you mean about trying to paint the fists without having to continually touch up stray dabs of yellow or green :-)

Love the demon hunter. Those bitz boxes really are worth the money!

Cheers Planetmut. There's loads of detail on the mechs, so finding an end line for any specific area is quite difficult, especially when I can't reach parts of those areas, LOL!!!

The Bitz pots were £3 each, so for £6 I've made three figures (one left to post) and still have loads of bitz left for next time when I pick up a couple more. I'm certainly happy with £2 a mini.

Great work on the Mechs Simon, for the pop of colour yo could have done the fists, so it looked like an identification of who the pilot was, similar to the propeller nosecones you were wanting to emulate.

Another interesting kitbash, you are spot on with the Eldar part as it is indeed a support weapons gunshield. Interesting you used a necron weapon, as one of the stories that GW was going to use was that the Legion of the Damned were actually reanimated dead marines using Necron tech made by the Mechanicum

Thanks Dave. I did consider the fists, as I've done this before on the two Soviet walkers I've painted. But they're just not that accessible to a brush-tip on the Stormcrow as they're too close to the torso to see the detail clearly.

I'm really enjoying these kitbashes, and have one more to come until I next visit LVL Up. Hopefully, I can get all three painted and flocked by then, and keep the momentum going. I wasn't aware of the Legion Of The Damned lore, and simply thought the Necron Weapon tied into the demon hunter being a cyborg. Glad I spotted the Eldar part correctly, albeit I have filed off pieces of it so I could attach some…
