"The Sons Of Horus Are Close-Up Killers..."

Updated: Jul 24, 2023

"...Who enjoy a good charge as much as any frothing World Eater or exsanguinating Blood Angel."

This 28mm plastic miniature of a Space Marine is by "Games Workshop" and comes from the Warhammer: The Horus Heresy – Age of Darkness boxed set. The multi-part figure has been assembled wearing MK VI armour and will form part of a (second) ten-man strong tactical squad for my five-hundred-point Sons of Horus traitor force.

Able to resist "the red mist of battle", the model was initially primed with "Citadel" Sons Of Horus Green, before being heavily washed with Nuln Oil, and dry-brushed with (more) Sons Of Horus Green. I also applied some "Citadel" Abaddon Black to one of his shoulder-pads, his grenades, Bolter, chain bayonet, backpack, helmet, and the joints of his Corvus Armour.

"Pendraken Miniatures" WIPs - These two Panther G tanks just need some washes and decals

The Space Marine's power tubes, "anti-personnel ballistic weapon", and equipment were later treated to a combination of "Vallejo" Gunmetal and "Citadel" Nuln Oil. I then gave the miniature's right shoulder-pad a single coat of "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna, before applying some "Vallejo" Gold and a splash of "Citadel" Agrax Earthshade to it. These areas were later highlighted using some additional touches of "Vallejo" Gold along the edges and rivets.

As with all my Sons of Horus I lastly applied some "Scalecolor" Speed Metal to the figure's eye lenses. These were subsequently given a lick of "Citadel" Flesh Tearers Red respectively and tidied up with some "Citadel" Abaddon Black. I also applied a couple of the many decals found on the "Games Workshop" Sons of Horus Legion transfer sheet onto the model's bare shoulder-pad and lower leg.

"Warlord Games" WIPs - These Confederate soldiers are having their pants 'picked out'

In addition, I've almost finished a couple of German Panther G tanks by "Pendraken Miniatures" I want to add to my Ardennes Offensive project. These 10mm metal models are seriously hefty beasts, and actually contain some considerable detail on their hulls. As a result I'm spending a bit more time on them than I usually do on such small-scaled sculpts. and picked out the spades strapped to the armoured vehicles' sides, as well as their extra tracks.

Lastly, I have returned to along abandoned strip of 15mm scale plastic Confederate soldiers produced by “Warlord Games” which came free on a sprue accompanying Issue 393 of "Wargames Illustrated". Released as part of the Nottingham-based company's "Epic Battles: American Civil War" game for its Black Powder rule-set, this is one of (just) four ten-man lines I currently intend to pigment as a Florida infantry regiment, so many will be depicted wearing straw hats.

Awesome space marine! I love the Horus Heresy stuff, so my bias is showing, but great stuff.

The Panther tanks look significantly better sculpts than the Crusaders so good on you for investing a bit more time on those details. I can't wait to see them finished.

Blimey, you are dipping into the pile of shame big time with those Warlord ACW minis!! Lol. I loved them when you first painted them in 1998, so glad they are being dusted off. Haha.

Cheers Undercoat. Nice to get another Beakie marine finished.

The Panther tanks are now finished, and I plan to pick up a couple more (at least) when I next visit the Pendraken Miniatures stall at a show.

I actually only stopped painting my Warlord ACW minis early last year, following the completion of my 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment. 😘 But it has been a bit of a while, and I now need to completely relearn how I started painting them a bit quicker before my mojo for the ten-man strips dissipates.

Another lovely SoH, Simon, and the decals really bring him to life! I'm also looking forward to a group shot of your traitorous Beakies!

Thanks Matt. I'm looking forward to a group shot too - as it'll mean the ten-man unit is finally finished. LOL!! 😃

The decals on those Marines' pauldrons are so subtle in design, but look so good now applied. Can we see the whole squad together in a group shot?

Panthers.... bloody things are a pain to deal with in just about any rules system! :)

Cheers Dai. The decal sheets was very expensive direct from GW. But I've only touched the tip of the iceberg with them - so probably have enough for the as many Sons of Horus I ever care to paint - including all the 15mm vehicles I've already painted by "Alternative Armies".

A group shot will be coming once this second squad is finished. I'm planning on using them for Xenos Rampant, so you should see them in action before I finally play Horus Heresy.

The Panthers are almost finished, so should feature in a Battle of the Bulge BatRep before the month is over.

Great work on the Son Simon, and another one finished, nice progress on the tanks, and a surprising return to the ACW strips as well.

Thanks Dave. There's a few more SoH just the odd hobby session away from completion, so I'm trying to work on one every other day. The ACW came about because I started watching Napoleonic films again, which always get me in the mood for lots of line infantry - and before I start on my Waterloo epic stuff, I want to get some more ACW finished first - hopefully that makes sense. 😛
