"The Most Ancient Black Puddings..."

Updated: Oct 19, 2022

"...Are vast pools of inky death."

This pre-painted 28mm scale plastic miniature of an Elder Black Pudding is by "Wizkids" and is one of the "randomly assorted monsters" found in their "exciting line of Dungeons & Dragons miniatures, Icons Of The Realms." Happily however, I didn't need to attempt to collect all forty-five of the "Boneyard" models, and instead picked it up from a dealer at this year's Southampton Comic Con.

Reaching an impressive 95mm in height, and sculpted so as to allow a 'normal-sized' foot figure to be placed inside its grisly expanse, the model was actually left on its transparent stand and simply super-glued to a "Citadel" 100mm circular base. The creature was then primed with two coats of "Citadel" Abaddon Black, dry-brushed with "Vallejo" Heavy Charcoal and finally drenched in "Citadel" Nuln Oil.

"The Warmaster's Own"

Alongside my "gargantuan Ooze" I have also pigmented three more 15mm metal miniatures taken from "The Ion Age" range by “Alternative Armies”. These 'beakies' are all from IAF008 Retained Knight Post Charlie and are carrying Angis Rifles. Ordinarily, the sci-fi soldiers are fielded in Lances of twenty-two men by the Prydian Army, but as I intended to use them as proxy Sons Of Horus space marines they were super-glued upon a medium-sized plastic "Flames Of War" base by “Battlefront Miniatures”.

Each model was undercoated with two layers of "Citadel" Sons Of Horus Green, before being shaded with "Citadel" Nuln Oil, and later dry-brushed with (more) Sons Of Horus Green. I next applied some "Citadel" Abaddon Black to their shoulder-pads, as well as the tops of their backpacks and firearms. All the miniatures' power units and rifles were subsequently treated to a combination of "Vallejo" Gunmetal and "Citadel" Nuln Oil.

"Twisted Pinnacle 3D" WIPs - These four Sentry Robots have been dry-brushed and base layered

Finally, I carefully placed a thin line of watered-down "Citadel" Abaddon Black into both models' visor slits and 'picked out' the ridges of the occasional shoulder-pad with a little "Vallejo" Gold and a dash of "Citadel" Agrax Earthshade. Due to the thickness of their single-cast stands, the Retained Knights required a few sausages of Green-stuff to encircled them before I could grit (and flock) their bases.

Staying with science fiction, I have made some more progress on the Sentry Robots sold under licence by “Twisted Pinnacle 3D”. The models have now all had their metallic eyes and blasters layered with "Citadel" Abaddon Black, ready for some "Vallejo" Gunmetal and "Citadel" Nuln Oil...

Love me some Black pudding, though I'd rather have it in me, than the other wat around😉

Another nice stand of 15mm Space Marines, I'm not sure but I might like these more than the 28mm versions (but I might be biased here! 😁)

I am however sure that I do love those "Sentry Robot's" the colours look absolutely spot on with them mate.

Cheers Roger.

Cheers Roger. I have a load more minis from The Ion Age to come (as I just found a large bag full of 'em in my Pile of Potential), so plenty more see over the next few weeks. I certainly prefer the Retained Knights over their larger GW ones as they're super-quick to paint, LOL.

I'm really pleased with how the Sentry Robots have turned out, and think the combination of "Vallejo" Heavy Red and "Citadel" Agrax Earthshade is a good match.

Ah man, you had to mention black pudding?! I haven't had any in years, Americans react to the very thought of it like an anti-vaxxer reacts to basic medical information. Crap, now I want a fry-up.

Where was I? Oh yeah, all these look great! I've seen those black pudding creatures around (Reaper does one called Gelatinous Slime) and they're cool looking, and you've done real justice to that horrible creature! One thing: do you think a touch of gloss varnish might bring out its contours a bit more, or are they supposed to be matte black?

As always I love the Sons of Horus Ion Age minis, they look like a slightly lower-tech version of GW's beakies. The Sentry…

Thanks Matt. With hindsight there were a few of these larger D&D models which I should have bought. But as I'm so pushed with what I want to get painted for the rest of the year, I thought the Black Pudding was the easiest of the lot - plus I love D&D Oozes. I may well apply some gloss varnish to the Black Pudding. I simply don't trust my "Citadel" 'Ard Coat though as it went a bit gloopy on S.T.A.R. so I need to dig out an alternative.

Many more 15mm Ion Age figures in the pipeline, and the first of my finished Sentry Robots should be posted up soon.

I like that D&D black pudding. Looks great, although it's not the kind of black pudding I like with my cooked breakfast! I like your work on the 15mm space marines, they look fab. Your robot sentries are coming along nicely too, I can't wait to see the finished articles.

Cheers Undercoat. The Black Pudding was love at first sight just as soon as I saw it. I do like my D&D oozes, LOL!!! Just one more stand of 15mm Retained Knights to go, and then I want to do a small stand with a heavy weapon - that, in my mind at least will be enough 'normal' Sons of Horus for my reimagined Horus Heresy game. Hoping to have the Sentry Robots finished soon, as I have another load of Twisted Pinnacle 3D prints to paint.

Great find on the black pudding Simon, and looks very effective. Another great stand of 15 mm Sons, and nice progress on the sentries, the colours are looking great

Thanks Dave. An impulse buy but I do love my D&D oozes, and this one was huge. Not a difficult paint-job either - LOL!!! Slowly working my way through my Ion Age collection. Found another big bag of the stuff last night, so plenty to keep me going for a few years yet. Hope to have the Sentry Robots finished soon - as I rather like the look of a few more 3D printed figures Twisted Pinnacle print.
