"Salute" Loot 2021

Updated: Nov 20, 2021

"South London Warlords" WIPs - Paul Hicks' sculpt, the Boy With Spitfire, is slowly being painted

After almost a two-year absence, I was finally able to once again make the pilgrimage to the ExCeL convention centre in Custom House, East London earlier this month, so as to add a few more bags of lead and plastic to my ever-swelling ‘incline of inspiration’. I must confess I didn’t really know what to expect from the much delayed show, especially as a number of companies decided to announce their non-attendance at short notice, such as “Mierce Miniatures” - who appeared to have posted up their no-show decision on social media the evening before it actually started.

Happily however, considering just how many manufacturers ultimately decided not to appear without any warning whatsoever, I wasn’t just travelling up to “the Big Smoke” to purchase goodies, but to also meet up with some of my fellow bloggers like Dave Docherty (“One Man And His Brushes”), Tamsin Piper (“Wargaming Girl”) and Ray Rousell (“Don’t Throw A One”). This impromptu get together late in the morning was easily the highlight of the day, and also allowed me to obtain a little heads up as to what these prodigious painters would be potentially pigmenting for the upcoming Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge (AHPC).

"Reaper Miniatures" WIPs - A Werecrocodile and Werearmadillo

Loot-wise, things were looking rather sparse for a considerably long time, despite it taking me a good hour or so to slowly make my way around all the stalls sat up against the edges of the grand hall. This year’s “lovely little commemorative figure of the Battle Of Britain” immediately caught my eye when I spied it in my goodie bag, and I also managed to pick up a “Reaper Miniatures” Werecrocodile and Werearmadillo from an early seller who seemingly had every Bones figure imaginable for sale. Yet surprisingly, that was it for quite a while as I walked past a disconcertingly high number of empty tables.

Perhaps the show’s biggest deal was from a large stand (whose name escapes me) whose numerous staff were selling both old and new packets of “Flames Of War” models by “Battlefront Miniatures” at half the recommended retail price (RRP). One of my reasons for signing up to the AHPC this year is to ‘push through’ my Late War Germans, so I thought this would be an ideal opportunity to bulk up on some reinforcements. As a result I picked up a 15cm Infantry Gun Platoon, a 7.5cm Infantry Gun Platoon, a Fallschirmjager Rifle Platoon, and a D-Day Mission Token Set. To be honest I could have bought more, but as the sellers kept having to use their phones to web-search the RRP for each blister I selected before giving me a price, my (im)patience dictated that I settled upon just the bare essentials.

"Red Eagle Miniatures" WIPs - These French Line skirmishing figures have been primed

Disappointingly, the centre of the hall was probably where the ‘no-shows’ made their biggest impact as there were some considerable holes in the line-up, and despite looking I never managed to find the likes of “Gripping Beast”, “Hasslefree” or “Troll Trader” – the last of which usually sees me fork out an inordinate amount of dosh on genres/ranges I never ever anticipated buying. To be honest, this soon caused me to return to the edge stalls for a second perusal, and thus caused me to miss Dave Stone’s “Wargames Terrain Workshop” stand completely. Though I did get to spend five minutes chatting to Duncan Rhodes about his new “Two Thin Coats Paints” range.

This subsequent, albeit whirlwind, tour of the outer tables ultimately landed me with my most expensive purchase of the day, as I returned to “Red Eagle Miniatures” and their 10mm range of Franco-Prussian models. This has always been a period which has fascinated me, but I have never properly ventured into it before now. In addition, I tend to predominantly stick with “Pendraken Miniatures” for my 10mm fix, so I actually felt a little guilty buying a range I knew they produced from someone else. However, in the end I decided to pick up a packet each from most of the e-commerce company’s infantry range to trial during the AHPC, along with a couple of cavalry units too…

Great to meet up once again Simon. I'm glad you got your 10mm Franco - Prussian War fix, I shall look forward to seeing them painted up.

Thanks Ray. Great to see you too. I certainly hope the Franco-Prussians will turn out well, as I thought the Red Eagle Miniatures range were delightful.

Lovely work on the boy with the Spitfire, Simon, and what an excellent sculpt. It's reminiscent of the poster for Empire of the Sun. I'm looking forward to seeing you finish it.

Good to hear that you got some goodies at the show, but sorry that it wasn't what you'd thought it would be. If I was still in the UK I'd have gone for sure just to check it out.

Cheers Matt. I'm hoping to have the statue finished soon, as I have a few statues on the painting table - some of which I'm saving as quick points for the AHPC tbh.

I think the show was definitely worth going to - indeed, I'm off to another in a weeks time. But it certainly didn't have the wow factor previous events have had. Although, that is probably to be expected considering the times we're currently enduring, and I was personally grateful that it was on at all.

Some nice and interesting choices there Simon, glad you got to the "Bloggers Meetup" but a shame you missed Dave (though your wallet probably thanks you! ).

Seems a bit of a rum do with Red Eagle Miniatures making you wait while the check the RRP on line, must have cost them sales as not everyone is as patient as your good self.

Cheers Roger,

Thanks Roger. I didn't actually make the planned Blogger's meet at 1400 hours, as I'd already left well before then. I simply got a call from Dave Docherty asking me where I was, and literally as he appeared to say hello Tamsin appeared, and we then spotted Ray sat right beside us, LOL!!! Coincidence or what!?! LOL!!!

It wasn't "Red Eagle Miniatures" who were selling the FoW stuff at half RRP, it was someone completely different - possibly a European company as they all spoke pigeon-English. It was a bizarre set up though, and as I say, if they'd been labelled better I'd have spent a lot more. There was every pack of Fow I've ever seen there in one…

Great post and review of Salute. It is a shame the show wasn't up to usual standards but I guess the plague of Nurgle is still wreaking havoc and people are being justifiably cautious, both customers and vendors. Your purchases look and sound interesting, if a little eclectic! Again! The Reaper minis look very intriguing and I do like the FoW stuff you post so that sounds good. Those 10mm minis are a little small for me but I am sure your magic brush will work wonders, although I expect accurately coloured buttons and epaulettes!!!! Lol.

Cheers Undercoat. Apart from the shorter queue I didn't actually think much of the no-shows until I started moving around the centre area. Even then it initially appeared fine as Wayland Games and Warlord Games dominated their respective areas. However, once past them there were some huge gaps with just empty tables, and I got the impression the South London Warlords repositioned its Spitfire and Hurricane exhibition to soften one huge gap in particular.

I do recall a certain individual's pessimism for some 10mm Winter Germans/Russians I once bought at "Colours", so I'm hoping these will turn out just as well. Coloured epaulettes will indeed be a thing on them, and at 1 point per figure for the AHPC, I'm…

Nice little haul Simon, rather subdued from previous years. I think a lot of the customers stuck to the outer edges, as most of the gaming tables were empty in front of us, we saw very few customers wandering down the isles. Iain was looking to say hello and even got as far as where Gripping Beasts should have been and missed me (right next door ! LOL) Such a shame for the show, all those who didn't attend after saying they would, and hear a lot of traders brought a very reduced stock, and that was some of the big companies !

Thanks Dave, As I said on your own blog, I'm super sorry I missed your stall. My walk around the centre wasn't as scientifically done as I clearly thought it was, LOL!!! I'm sure I'd have spotted you on the edge. Though I'm not sure some sellers were in the right place, even there, as I visited "Fenris Games" and then later saw a similarly-sized area with empty table and name plate on it for them elsewhere!?!

I almost didn't hit the trigger with "Red Eagle Games" for the reason you mention - the reduced stock. As they didn't have any of their French or Prussian army packs with them, and simply gave me a list of their individual packs…
