“Robots Are Hulking Automations…”

“…With limited scope for tactical manoeuvres.”

This 6mm scale plastic model of a Conqueror Robot was produced by “Games Workshop” and could be found as part of their now long out of production (OOP) “Epic” range for the second edition of “Space Marine”. Incorporating “good armour and formidable combat ability,” the single-cast sculpt seems to have ‘officially’ been painted predominantly red - presumably to tie in with the Legio Cybernetica who built it.

But as I wanted it to form part of a force of Space Wolves, I decided to use it as a pilot piece for their colour scheme instead. As a result the tiny figure was temporarily glued to a wooden painting stick, before being primed with a double helping of “Vallejo” Heavy Bluegrey. It was then shaded in “Citadel” Nuln Oil and dry-brushed with (more) “Vallejo” Heavy Bluegrey, so as to better ‘highlight’ its impressive details.

"Catalyst Game Labs" WIPs - This Marauder has been primed “Vallejo” Japanese Uniform WWII

The robot’s heavy bolter and auto-cannon were initially ‘picked out’ using some “Citadel” Abaddon Black, and later treated to a combination of “Vallejo” Gunmetal and “Citadel” Nuln Oil. Whilst it’s eyes and power-fist were pigmented using a little “Vallejo” Heavy Ochre and “Citadel” Reikland Fleshshade. All of these areas were then delicately dry-brushed (or spotted) with either “Vallejo” Gunmetal or Heavy Ochre as appropriate.

Having scrambled around my collection of old “Epic” models, I actually seem to own quite a few of this particular miniature, so my plan during the upcoming Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge (AHPC) will be to paint up at least one for each of the loyalist Adeptus Astartes chapters I plan to field. In addition, I believe the Iron Warriors Primarch, Perturabo, used a number of Conqueror robots as his own personal Honour Guard, so I may well leave some spare if I decide to paint up some of my Chaos Space Marines as the traitorous IV Legion.

"Warlord Games" WIPs - Some of these Confederate soldiers just need some shading and highlights

Sticking with diminutive-sized science fiction figures, albeit the 1:285 scale plastic models by “Catalyst Game Labs”, I’ve finally started to re-base and undercoat the first of my large “Battletech” mechs for my Weird War Two campaign. First up will be a pair of impressively-sized Marauders to bolster the Japanese Empire’s forces in the Pacific theatre. As with my previously-painted Mitsubishi class War Walker these killing-machines have been primed in “Vallejo” Japanese Uniform WWII.

Finally, the end is very much in sight for the last of this year’s Weekly Challenges, randomly chosen by the turning of a playing card. I’ve just got some inks to apply to my latest 15mm scale plastic Confederate soldiers by “Warlord Games”, and will then add them to a twenty-man strong stand of Alabama soldiers for "Epic Battles: American Civil War" table-top game.

Nice epic robot. Looks quite cute! Doing some as Perturabo's body guard sounds awesome. I think they were purpose built by the Primarch and had big shields but the concept sounds fab! You just need an epic Perturabo to go with them!!

Your Japanese mech looks amazing. I like that design a lot. Your are doing amazing work on those epic ACW minis. The variation on that tiny scale is tremendous. You have a lot of patience.

Cheers Undercoat. I have another robot currently being progressed, as part of my Black Templars, which should hopefully be finished soon enough. The Japanese mechs have now been shaded, and I've selected another two different models to accompany them in the future - so eventually I should be able to field five Weird War Two walkers for the Imperial forces of Japan.

That Epic robot looks great as a Space Wolf! I can't for the life of me remember if the robots were actually part of a Marine chapter, but 40 years on who cares? LOL!

I like the Japanese mech, too, and it looks good so far. How much larger is it than the others?

Thanks Matt. From the numbers of robots I own I'll probably do a pair for each of the main loyalist space marine chapters I'm planning on fielding, so probably Space Wolves, Imperial Fists, Ultramarines and Dark Angels. I'm going to steer clear of Blood Angels for now as my Chaos forces are predominantly red - plus I've been using them with my 15mm proxy stuff.

The Large Battlemechs are about twice the size of some of the small mechs, and two-thirds the size of some middle mechs. I'll be starting to post up my Weird War Two campaign soon, which will soon start to show the different sizes in detail as the conflict progresses (and I paint up some of…

That "epic" robot has moved on since I last saw it (albeit 5 hours ago LOL), nice work on him anyway 😉 didn't twig the Space Wolves colours but I see it now of course!

Haha the Marauder mech, had to smile at this one as back in the days when we used to play Battletech, we actually banned anyone having one of those (albeit the original model not this updated one), as it was so much better than just about anything else in the game at the time and was also so blooming cool that everyone wanted one! 😀 So you'll have to do this justice mate, I will be watching!

Nearly finished on the ACW, they look good…

Cheers Roger. I'm usually a few days ahead of most of my WIPS tbh. Only the AHPC figures haven't progressed any further, as it doesn't start until 6am on Tuesday. I'm planning on a few Space Wolves units for my Adeptus Astartes forces, so couldn't resist a quick pilot piece in preparation for next week's mini-marathon.

I never played Battletech, so was unaware of the Marauder's fearsome reputation. Along with my two basic models, I've also spotted the Marauder IIC in one of the second wave boxes I recently acquired, so I might pigment the advanced refit version too early in the new year.

I might do some more ACW next year, but I don't like the figures being in…

Great work on the epic robot Simon, the colour scheme looks really good on this small robot. The next mech has a great shape to it, so look forward to seeing this develop, and on the home stretch with your ACW stand.

Thanks Dave. I've got a lot of Epic prepped for the AHPC - so much so that I'm in dire need of small FOW bases, so have ordered a load more from Battlefront Miniatures, LOL!!! I've got two of the Marauders, plus an advanced version (from the second wave of figures), so the Japanese will be well served on the tabletop once they're finished. Looking forward to getting the ACW strip varnished and based. If nothing else its another wooden stick I can use for Epic/FoW.
