"Little Is Detailed About Black Panther’s Life..."

Updated: Dec 8, 2023

"...Before the zombie plague arrived on Earth-2149."

This 32mm scale plastic model of T'Challa is produced by “CoolMiniOrNot” and can be found in the Original Marvel Zombies starter set for Zombicide. "Captured by Giant-Man before his transformation and used as foodstock", this particular incarnation of the Black Panther was created by Robert Kirkman and Sean Phillips for the January 2006 issue of "Marvel Zombies" by "Marvel Comics".

The entire model was initially treated to a double coat of "Warlord Games" Pitch Black, before being given an enthusiastic dry-brush of "Vallejo" Heavy Charcoal. The Avenger's necklace was then 'picked out' with some "Vallejo" Gunmetal, and then completely soaked in "Citadel" Nuln Oil. As a final step though, New Wakanda's leader had his eyes 'spotted' with a couple of drops of White Star by "Two Thin Coats".

"Pendraken Miniatures" WIPs - A pair of Sheman tanks slowly having their tracks and details 'picked out'

Originally, I was planning on taking a very simple approach to the Hero Miniature's base, with a simple layer or two of "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna. However, having seen all the branches, leaves and small stones littering it, I decided to spend a bit more time on it so as to help make it 'pop' a little more. Resultantly, I also applied a couple of coats of "Vallejo" Heavy Brown across all the groundwork surrounding T'Challa's wooden log, and later gave both areas a healthy dose of "Citadel" Agrax Earthshade.

To bring out all the sculpt's incredible details, I gave the tree stump a dry-brush of (more) "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna, and then the entire ensemble a delicate passing with some (more) "Vallejo" Heavy Brown. Lastly, I carefully traced/base-coated all the vines and leaves dotted about with a combination of "Vallejo" Heavy Green and (more) "Citadel" Agrax Earthshade.

"Pendraken Miniatures" WIPs - This BA-64 armoured car is being painted as one captured by the Germans

With my latest Zomtober entry finished, and a couple of 4x6 foot cloth gaming mats apparently winging their way to me from "Deep Cut Studios", I have also managed to spend some time progressing a significant number of 10mm vehicles I own by "Pendraken Miniatures" - most notably a pair of the Middlesbrough-based manufacturer's Sherman models which I believe I picked up from one of this year's wargaming shows for my ever evolving Battle of the Bulge campaign.

Additionally though, I have also made some significant in-roads on a host of decade-old Soviet four-wheeled armoured scout cars, which I originally thought were German Sd.Kfz 221 vehicles. Having mistaken the trio of BA-64s I had aimed to simply add them to my Operation Sealion invasion force. However, having had my error pointed out to me and already almost finished painting them, they're now going to be added to my Axis Ardennes Offensive Army, to represent a reconnaissance unit of the despicable SS Division Das Reich - which are known to have used the captured Russian cars at Kursk in July 1943, so might have retained some of them following their redeployment back West afterwards..?

Black Panther looks really good. I think the extra time and effort picking out the details on the base was really worth it. A fabulous mini.

I do like Sherman tanks having painted up a few for FoW so interested to see yours finished.

That is annoying having mis-labelled armoured cars, but at least your research means they can still be used. Another interesting read.

Thanks Undercoat. I'm certainly pleased I spent the extra time on the Black Panther's base. Though at the time I was a bit frustrated by all its detail.

These Sherman Tanks are a lot bulkier than the older Pendraken sculpts I painted earlier this year, so they'll certainly stand out a bit more on the tabletop. The mis-labelling was entirely my fault, and I've since found a few Soviet tanks which I had also somehow placed in my German tray. Still, at least I don't have to repaint them, as I think the grey colour-scheme rather suits the BA-64 cars.

Cheers Michal. I was contemplating repainting them once I realised they weren't German but Soviet cars. However, I like them too, and seeing as the Germans apparently captured & reused loads, I'll be keeping them grey. 😀

Hard to get a Black Panther wrong with his colour palette. :) Is he as ridiculously indestructible in this new game as he was made to be in the Marvel films?

I think your Sd.Kfz 221 might have been mislabeled Simon? That looks much more like a Soviet BA-64 from here.

Thanks Dai. I haven't played Marvel Zombies yet so have no idea about how the Black Panther plays - he'll actually be against me in the core set though, from what I understand, as the player is the zombie heroes munching on SHIELD and surviving heroes.

Gah!!! I think you're right Dai. Those models definitely look more in line with the BA-64 than the German vehicles - and I've almost finished all three too. I'm pretty sure I painted some BA-64s about a decade ago when I was doing a Soviet Early War force so I'll double-check that army first. Worst comes to the worst, they'll become German captured vehicles as I understand they captured quite a few of them…

Ah... At least I was sure I hadn't seen one on your blog - I'd imagine that would have been Top Ten stuff if I had. LOL!!! 😁

Great work on Black Panther Simon, good call on adding more work to his base with so much detail. Nice progress on your tanks and vehicles as well.

Thanks Dave. I think the extra browns and green help break up the Black Panther's base a bit more - though it took longer to paint the base than it did T'Challa himself. Still, nice to squeeze another Zomtober figure into the challenge.

Lots of 10mm Pendraken to come, somewhat unsurprisingly. I think I'll be painting my backlog for that company well into 2024 now - as another order has just arrived. LOL!! 😁
