(Lead) Mountain Musings - "Supers Unlimited" March 2021

Updated: Mar 3, 2022

"Kitbash Games" WIPs - Magma, Lightning Bug and N-Rage

This month's effort to whittle away at my mountain of metal, plastic and resin models will primarily focus upon a selection of figures by "Kitbash Games". Apparently "bound together by their connections to mysterious Star Stones", I've bought a good half-dozen more of the resin figures from the company's recently successful Supers Unlimited Teamstarter 1: Aegis Kickstarter campaign, and whilst I don't plan on using them for either "Pulp City" or the "Super Mission Force" gaming system, I do hope to get them on my Weird War Two tabletop soon.

I have also been rather busy basing and priming all the other miniatures I own from the "Supers Unlimited" range, including the formidably-sized Magman and N-Rage, who will be 'repurposed' as the fiery Axis super-villain Vesuvio and the equally powerful atomic-charged Nuklearmann respectively. I'm particularly looking forward to applying my brush-tip upon Magman, as I have never tackled a lava-based model before, so have watched a fair few painting tutorials on "YouTube" in order to work out a reasonably straightforward technique.

"Privateer Press" WIPs - The Paladin Commander is slowly having all his detail 'picked out'

In addition this month will see me settling down to finish off the six 35mm scale models which can be found inside the Iron Star Alliance Command Group Starter Set for "Warcaster: Neo-Mechanika". These multi-part metal castings by "Privateer Press" caused me quite a headache when I initially assembled them back in December 2020, especially the heavily-pinned Firebrand Warjack, and as a result I found my enthusiasm for the project was badly dented.

Fortunately, the promise of some pre-ordered reinforcements potentially arriving in the near future has galvanised me into some semblance of action, so I have started 'blocking off' elements of the Paladin shock troopers in "Citadel" Abaddon Black to either use as a basis for some additional layers of "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna and Brass, or to simply leave as is. I'm certainly not planning on going for the bright yellow palette depicted on the box's artwork, but probably more of a blue and bronze colour scheme which is a bit Ancient Egyptian in nature...

February 2021 - Models from a variety of manufacturers have been successfully painted

Productivity wise, the past four weeks saw a noticeable improvement on my output, which whilst still disappointingly low compared to previous years, was nonetheless more than twice the progress made last month. This tally was particularly pleasing as it both ensured I finally had enough "Atomic Mass Games" models to field a full ten-figure roster for Marvel Crisis Protocol, and saw me slowly whittle away at my overly large collection of miniatures by "Crooked Dice Game Design Studio".

Furthermore, I'm pretty much on an even keel when it comes to my New Year's resolution of painting two models for every new one I buy. My recent purchase from "Kitbash Games" has admittedly brought me to the very edge of that annual aspiration. But for now I'm still just ahead of the game, even though the latest successful "Crooked Dice Game Design Studio" Kickstarter, Lurkers From The Deep, should see me receive an assortment of sixteen government agents and law enforcement officers in May 2021.

I reckon it's always good to have a plan, mine tend to fall aprt on initiation. The repurposing of figures for other games is something I'm in agreement with . I do;t often see figures from one grnre being used across others, some ACW civilians, for example easily fit into European Victorian games etc.

Thanks Joe. I'm hoping to get both a load of "Kitbash Games" and "Warcaster" minis finished this month - and am already on track for that goal. I think repurposing is essential in this day & age, as there's just so many rule-sets out there and far too many figures to paint if you were going to just use one range of minis per rule-set.

I like the way you repurpose the super heroes to your weird war/pulp setting. Your Soviet inspired ones have been great and I do recall a rather splendid shark man who fought for Nazi Germany a few years ago!

I also like the medieval knight vibe for your warcaster mini. Very appropriate.

Thanks Undercoat. Lightning Bug will be joining my Soviet-themed super-heroes as the Bolshevik Bug, so expect to see him finished quite soon.

Ah, yes... Carcharodon - the shark-headed Nazi super-villain. Lost count how many stories I've written and drawn involving him in my comic strips over the years, LOL!!

I think the palette for the Iron Alliance Warcaster models is working out very well, and despite repeatedly layering the same areas so as to build up to Brass, the painting is going rather quickly too.

Another nice group of Supers there Simon, I haven't painted any Supers for what seems like years, and I haven't got any pencilled in for this year either, hmmm might have to have a think about that. 🤔

Nice work on the Paladin too, though I have to admit to not even have heard of that game except on your blog and your woes last year with the multi part figures.

Cheers Roger.

Cheers Roger. Plenty of Supers to come over the next month or so, as I'm currently assembling, basing and priming all my "Kitbash Games" stuff for a big painting push. Indeed, Blackthorn is already finished and should be posted up next.

With the exception of the ghastly Warjack, I rather like the Warcaster models, so I'm hoping I'll be able to crack these out quite quickly too. Certainly the Paladin Commander should be finished soon. There's also a load of expansions due for the Iron Alliance in March (having been postponed from last year), so perhaps once they hit the shelves the publicity around the game will take off. I believe the Starter Sets are rather scarce currently too, so…

An interesting array of figures your currently working on Simon, which method did you plump for on Magma, paint wash or glaze ?

Thanks Dave. Magma's being painted using white, red, orange and yellow. With a bit of dry-brushing at the red stage to add some glow to the sides of the cracks. I'm sure I'll post up some of the WIPs over the next week or so.
