"In Some Of The Far Eastern Kingdoms..."

"...Houses, temples, and government buildings are often guarded by large, slow constructs called shrieking wolves."

These two 28mm scale Shrieking Wolves are produced by “North Star Military Figures” and can be bought as code FGV337 from their “Frostgrave" range. "Designed as alarms to scare away intruders", the statues can be encountered by adventurers exploring the Collegium of Artistry - "a vast, labyrinthine complex of halls, classrooms, and laboratories built into the mountainside."

"Fleeing is generally the best course of action."

Initially primed in "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna, the pair of "tough and tenacious" creatures were subsequently treated to a layer or two of Brass and shaded using "Citadel" Agrax Earthshade. Ordinarily, I then usually brighten my miniatures back up with a dry-brush of (more) "Vallejo" Brass, yet on this occasion I wanted the statues to remain somewhat darker than normal, so skipped this step in favour of applying a sporadic wash of the "Citadel" Nihilakh Oxide.

Once this "Citadel" Technical paint had been applied to all of the metal figures' nooks and crannies, I slowly started to blend it in using a dry-brush of "Vallejo" Brass. Finally, I went back to areas such as the beasts' maws and paws with some additional "Citadel" Nihilakh Oxide simply to ensure that they were suitably weathered.

"Games Workshop" WIPs - The Uruk-hai Captain's flesh has now been completed

Momentarily stepping across from Joseph A. McCullough's fantasy world of "Frostgrave" to that of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord Of The Rings", I have made some steady progress on an old Uruk-hai Captain figure I plan to add to my 500-point strong Isengard army for the Middle-Earth Strategy Battle Game. The now seemingly OOP metal command miniature by "Games Workshop" won't actually represent a leader for my force, but rather one of Saruman's shield-less brutal warriors who will only cost 9 points...

In addition to this, I have been assembling, priming and layering a handful more "Supers Unlimited" models by "Kitbash Games". I still have quite a backlog of these resin sculpts, including one of Doc Cosmos which quite embarrassingly dates back to before the company ran their first successful "Kickstarter" back in August 2019.

"Kitbash Games" WIPs - Primor the Powerful, Doc Cosmos and Immolator

I had originally started painting the protector of Empire City in a blue and red colour scheme somewhat similar to his 'official' palette. However, I've since completely repainted the figure "Vallejo" Silver and "Citadel" Abaddon Black so as to better represent Captain Cosmonaut; a Soviet super-hero from Weird War Two. I do though own a second copy of this miniature, and have been contemplating whether to either pigment him in a less 'sparkly' costume denoting a time before he become so cosmically-powerful, or simply turn him into a statue/objective marker which was erected in honour of his noble, war-time deeds...

The verdigris on the dogs (obviously based on FOO dogs imho) is wonderfully underdone, and the sculpts themselves are superbly dynamic. I have a pair of Foo Dogs, statues (possibly from Ainsty) that are very staid in comparison.

I do like seeing what's 'in the pipeline' and this trio of unknows, to me at least, look very interesting.

Cheers Joe. I do like doing weathered bronze/brass as you know, so I simply could not resist this pair of statues - especially as for once they actually count as finished figures rather than just scenery (which I never count towards my annual painting tally).

I've managed to finish the Doc Cosmos mini now, and will hopefully get Immolator completed some time soon too.

Smashing work on the statues as always Simon, you must have more dogs than a Chinese restaurant by now!

Nice work too on the Orc too, looks just like the ones I remember from the movies.

And another batch of Supers is always a welcome sight. that middle one is a ringer for the old "Captain Planet" cartoon character.

Cheers Roger.

Cheers Roger. I do enjoy an opportunity to paint weathered brass/bronze whenever I can, so I was delighted to see these two Frostgrave figures appear in the bestiary. I think they're the only ones I own though which are actually monsters as opposed to lifeless scenic statues/objective markers.

I've now got a couple of finished Uruk-hai to post when the opportunity arises, as I'm slowly progressing through the number needed so I can field 500pts worth.

I do enjoy painting the Kitbash Games superheroes, and still have a fair few to finish before I can order some more. I'd not thought of Captain Planet before, but I can see the similarities with the mullet and my decision to go with…

I really like the way you've used the verdigris to make those statues look old and weathered. I've tried using Vallejo Verdigris on some models but I've never got the hang of it, although it did work well on one.

The Uruk-Hai looks awesome so far, full of menace, although he seems to be armed with a Plague Marine sword :-)

"I far prefer Vallejo paints over Citadel." - Me too, Planetmut. Apart from Abaddon Black (and to a lesser extent Ironbreaker" I rarely use "Citadel" paints. I do though much prefer their washes over "Vallejo".

Great work on the statues Simon, you do a great job on your ancient brass. Great progress on the Uruk, and some interesting Supers you're working on

Cheers Dave. I do enjoy a bit of brass/bronze weathering - so any excuse to paint something up in that palette is always taken. Lots more Uruk-hai to come as I've finished a couple of old LotR metal ones now, as well as Doc Cosmos too.

Those shrieking wolves are awesome. Lovely sculpts and great paint job. Your technique for painting patinated aged bronze is superb. Good job sir!

Your Uruk looks great. You are powering along with him.

More supers? Not surprised as you seem very enthused by them atm.

Nice varied post.

Thanks very much indeed, Undercoat. I think the "Vallejo" Brass is a marvellous colour, and works really well with the "Citadel" Nihilakh Oxide. Perhaps one day, I'll get the chance to paint an entire aged Bronze army, LOL!!!

Both the Uruk-hai Captain figure and Doc Cosmos are now finished, and ready for posting. Hopefully, I'll have some more "Kitbash Games" super-heroes finished soon too.
