These six 15mm scale metal miniatures of some Lesser Fire Elementals are produced by “Alternative Armies” and can be bought either separately as blister HOT88 Lesser Elementals or as part of the company's pre-made twenty-four point strong HOTT1017 Elemental Army pack. The rather small sculpts count as Shooters for "Hordes Of The Things", with three figures sitting upon each 40mm x 20mm base.
Initially, each model was super-glued upon a wooden baton to help my brush-tip better reach all their details, and were primed using a couple of coats of "Vallejo" Sun Yellow. The models were then shaded using a little "Citadel" Reikland Fleshshade and dry-brushed with (more) "Vallejo" Sun Yellow, a little Heavy Red and finally a tiny amount of Dark Vermillion.
Unfortunately, I was even more unimpressed with the final result on these miniatures, than I was on the Giant Fire Elemental I've previously painted. The rounded detail on each figure didn't appear crisp enough for my brush technique to gently graze the very edge of their flames and as a result, each monster simply looked like a red blob which had escaped from Noel's House Party.
I therefore repeated the entire dry-brushing process once again, but tried to ensure I only sporadically applied my brush-tip to different areas of each elemental, rather than completely cover the entire model. In addition, I attempted to make each creature's ghastly face stand out all the more from the tabletop by purposely pigementing the eyes with some "Vallejo" Heavy Red and "Citadel" Carroburg Crimson, as well as lining the sockets and mouths in Sun Yellow.
Having finished my Elemental Army's penultimate unit, I have momentarily turned my attention towards completing a number of Federated Security Troopers by "Crooked Dice Game Design Studio". I've recently been making good use of my current collection of painted figures from this range whilst testing out some collaborative "Blake's Seven" scenarios for my homemade rule-set "M.I.S.S.", and have now found I need a few more black-suited minions to make my games even larger.
For starters I want my proxy of Section Leader Klegg to be accompanied by two members of the Federation Death Squad he used to board the Liberator with, as an alternative to him simply having health tokens. I also thought it would be nice to have the option to field a second senior officer other than Space Commander Travis, in the shape of Space Major Provine from the March 1979 television episode "Countdown"...
Cheers Roger. The Blake's Seven minis do indeed look rather special, so I have high hopes of getting them finished asap tbh.
I have to say I think you've made the best of a bad job with those fire elementals, if you had shown me the unpainted castings I don't think "Fire Elemental" would have been in my first fifty guesses as to what they were (sorry), they do look more like something that would burst for someone's chest in a Roger Corman movie. (still did better than my with Hottember though).
The Federation troopers on the other hand are wonderful sculpts, I particularly love the heavy weapons chap, they should come up a treat especially with your skill at painting black clad figures!
Cheers Roger.
Thanks Undercoat. The Fire Elementals have really dented my enthusiasm for the entire project tbh, so I'm pleased that I've only got the wizard to finish otherwise I fear it would be yet another project side-lined unfinished.
Cheers Dave. I'm not happy with either the sculpts or paint-job on the Lesser Fire Elementals tbh. But they're the best I could do with what I had. The Blake's 7 minis are real corkers imho. I'm looking forward to painting them, and getting them on the gaming tabletop.
I think you have done well with the materials you had! I don't like those sculpts at all to be honest. They don't convey fire elemental at all. Great job with what you had though. You can almost polish a turd!!
